Kevin's Mittens. Charitably helping to provide mittens for those in need in Kevin's name.
Kevin's Story
Kevin was a smart funny kid with ideas. And one day he wanted me to make him a giant mitten so little by little over years I knitted him a giant mitten. Kevin grew up to be a fine young man helpful and considerate of others. He volunteered in helping the homeless and helping troubled teens. This he did quietly and even his family knew little if anything about it until after his death in the back seat of a car that had a head on collision with a van when he was 25 years old.
He was a lot more too. He wrote poetry, wanted to work in the music industry after finding out he didn’t have what it took to have his own band. He loved life and his friends.

Hi Folks,
I have to eat my words. There was box in the mailbox waiting for me from a family friend for Kevin's Mittens with seven pair inside.
Sorry I spouted off the other day. I should have known that help was coming.
Thank you all for your good thoughts and mittens too.
Please Join me in making mittens for those in need in your area. If you don't knit buy some mittens or gloves and donate them. If you live in a warmer region of the world and mittens are not needed give canned goods to a local food pantry for those in need. I only ask that you do it in Kevin's name. All helping hands count.

Who am I?
I'm Kevin's Mom
Kevin may be gone from the here and now but I want his good works to go on.
So now I sit here and I knit mittens in Kevin’s name and ask you to do the same. Knit or buy mittens or gloves and donate them in Kevin’s name to a local charity and please let me know. This I do in good faith so please don’t tell me you have donated mittens if you have not done so.
If you have read the big mitten story you know I have been knitting mittens for a long time. But only on November 23, 2008, after watching people on the evening news, waiting outside on long lines for heating assistance and/or food help and trying to keep their hands warm that the idea fully formed. I can help them and others by knitting mittens and donating them to organizations or church groups that distribute that kind of thing. And I could do it in my son’s name.
At first I committed to knitting a mitten a day, or nineteen pair, to get the project off the ground and from Nov. 24, 2008 to Dec. 31, 2008 I made 20 pair of mittens. Now I am trying to make two pair a week because I have other charitable commitments to my time also. But I am knitting as many as time will allow.
Other Donations
There are people who live in areas of the world that mitten are not needed. And there are also folks that don't do crafts to make mittens themselves. There is a way you can still help.
Any Donations of goods to charities like Homeless Shelters, Domestic Violence Shelters, Soup Kitchens and Community Pantries in Kevin's name are helpful.
Canned or dry foods, clothing, bedding, and toiletries as well as baby diapers are always needed there.
It is heartwarming to see a response from others like that!
